Star Wars: The Force Awakens took everything Jurassic World worked so hard to achieve, setting benchmarks for a slew of records. Meanwhile, The Road Chip has the weakest opening the Chipmunks have seen yet, and Sisters opens well enough.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens grossed $247.9 million in its debut weekend, annihilating the $208.8 million opening weekend record that Jurassic World set in June. The Force Awakens started the weekend with a record $57 million in Thursday evening showings (topping Deathly Hallows - Part 2's $43.5 million midnight showings). That, combined with Friday's grosses, made for the largest single day gross with a mighty $119.1 million (topping Deathly Hallows - Part 2's $91 million). On Saturday, the film "only" grossed $68.2 million for the third largest Saturday gross (Jurassic World remains in first with $69.6 million). Finally, Sunday brought the best news with a $60.5 million gross to set the record for the day (topping Jurassic World's $57.2 million) to all total to a mammoth $247.9 million weekend. At least the Jurassic World folks were cool with it.
Shockingly, there are more records to discuss, all of which I placed all nice and neat for you right here. The Force Awakens has already grossed $528.9 million worldwide with a $200 million budget already covered.
In a laughably distant second sits Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip. The fourth Chipmunks flick grossed $14.2 million in its debut weekend. The third film, Chipwrecked ($23.2 million opening/$133.1 million domestic total), was already a serious low point for the franchise after the original ($44.3 million/$217.3 million) and the Squeakquel ($48.8 million/$219.6 million) performed much better. The Road Chip has a $90 million budget, which seems out of reach domestically, but these films have always done incredibly well overseas so Fox isn't worried. It will be a low point for the franchise though, with Star Wars playing a huge part in that.
Sisters debuted in third with $13.9 million. Made for $30 million, the Tina Fey-Amy Poehler comedy will pass that budget by the end of its run domestically with a 60% Rotten Tomatoes score that I'm sure translated to a 600% for the millions of Fey-Poehler fanatics that went as far as to sit through the Golden Globes for them. Sisters currently has $15.7 million worldwide.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 was finally dethroned from its four straight weekends in first place. The Hunger Games finale managed $5.8 million (-48.4%) this weekend against the mighty blows from Star Wars and Sisters. The $160 million finale has grossed $595.5 million worldwide.
Creed placed in fifth with $5 million (-50.5%). That hefty drop can be blamed on Star Wars, which aside from drawing audience attention, caused the film to lose over 1,000 theaters. Thankfully, the $35 million boxing flick is already in the clear with $96.7 million worldwide.
The Good Dinosaur fell to sixth with $4.3 million (-57.8%). It keeps getting worse for Pixar's troubled film with only $189.7 million worldwide and Chipmunks and lightsabers soaking up the spotlight. The $200 million flick has a few more foreign markets left to open in, but none of them will make this a success. Pixar finally has a failure on its record.
Krampus sat in seventh this weekend with $4.1 million (-51.1%). The film has managed to get $35.1 million domestically from a $16.2 million weekend, which is terrific for a horror film. Made for $15 million, Krampus has an excellent $47.9 million worldwide.
In the Heart of the Sea fell from second to eighth with $3.8 million (68.5%). Suffering the biggest blow from Star Wars' domination, the Chris Hemsworth whale film has only grossed $18.6 million domestically. With a budget over $100 million, that's a pretty bad sign. Foreign audiences won't be much help, as they only brought the worldwide total to $68 million.
Dilwale debuted in ninth with $1.9 million. After opening on Thursday with $109k, the Bollywood film has grossed $2.02 million in its first four days in 268 theaters.
Another Bollywood film was able to crack the top ten with Bajirao Mastani opening to $1.7 million. The romantic epic currently sits in 304 theaters.
Christmas weekend is upon us! On Wednesday, The Big Short reaches wide release and on Friday, December 25, Daddy's Home, Point Break, Joy, and Concussion join the party.
