* This was the lowest-grossing weekend of the year with just $89.3 million. Feb. 5-7 was the record holder with $95 million. Blame Sully, Snowden, and Renée Zellweger for not being interesting enough. *
Sully took in $21.6 million (-38.2%) in its second weekend. The $60 million Tom Hanks drama has already pulled in $70.1 million domestically and $24.3 million from foreign markets. Sully lands in Japan and South Korea in the next couple of weeks before hitting the UK, Germany, Italy, and more in December. Warner Bros. finally has some good news after a summer of negative press from Tarzan and Suicide Squad.
Blair Witch opened to $9.5 million. That's a jaw-dropping 67.2% less than the $29.2 million wide release opening of the first film from 1999. The new film couldn't even top the $13.2 million opening of Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 from 2000. Blair Witch was hit with negative reviews in a time when horror fans are anything but hungry. Don't Breathe is less than a month old, and The Conjuring 2 and Lights Out made some noise over the summer. Even though Blair Witch caused buzz when it was announced back in July at Comic-Con, there clearly isn't much of a fanbase left for the franchise, and it's well known that the "found footage" horror genre has been lacking originality. But the movie was made for $5 million and pulled in an additional $4.9 million from foreign territories. So, it's a success.
Bridget Jones's Baby took in $8.5 million in its debut. It's not much of a drop from the $10.7 million opening of the first film from 2001 and the $8.6 million opening of the sequel from 2004, the latter of which opened in semi-limited release. Baby was made for $35 million, which won't be a problem with the franchise's success in foreign territories. The two other Bridget Jones movies made over $200 million each from foreign markets. The franchise remains especially popular in the UK where its $11.3 million opening is the biggest for a romantic comedy and for the month of September. Baby has pulled in $37.5 million worldwide so far.
Snowden opened to a mere $8 million. That's not looking too good for the film's $40 million budget and poor Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The negative reviews will keep the film from taking in much from foreign markets and JGL hasn't opened over $10 million since he shared top billing with Bruce Willis for Looper in 2012.
Don't Breathe grossed $5.6 million (-31.6%) in its fourth weekend. The horror thriller has pulled in a terrific $75.3 million domestically and $31.7 million from foreign territories for $107.1 million worldwide. On a $9.9 million budget, it's a job well done for Sony and Screen Gems.
When the Bough Breaks had its cradle fall 61.4% in its second weekend to gross $5.4 million. That's a hefty drop, but on par with similar films in the genre. The movie has pulled in $22.8 million worldwide on a $10 million budget. Regardless of how it performs from here on out, it's pretty much good to go.
The Wild Life took in $2.7 million (-17.1%) on its second weekend. That's a terrific drop considering just about nobody knows this movie exists. The Lionsgate animation is a success anyway thanks to its measly $13 million budget. The film has grossed a profitable $27.6 million worldwide.
