Boo! A Madea Halloween took in $28.5 million on its opening weekend. That's the third best opening for the Madea franchise behind 2009's Madea Goes to Jail ($41.0m) and 2006's Madea's Family Reunion ($30.0m). The comedy, which has writer and director Tyler Perry in three roles, was made for a modest $20 million. It shouldn't be much longer until Lionsgate is cashing checks with their seventh (!) Madea movie.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back opened to $22.8 million. The Tom Cruise sequel improved on the $15.2 million opening weekend of its 2012 predecessor, although that movie opened in December where movies open low but holdover well. It's unlikely the sequel will reach $80 million domestic like the original, but, with foreign markets, the movie should have no trouble making a profit. The film was made for $60 million and already has $53.8 million worldwide.
Ouija: Origin of Evil grossed $14.0 million in its debut. That may be a 29.2% drop from the $19.8 million debut of Ouija from 2014, but the $9 million sequel already has $21.7 million worldwide. So whatever.
The Accountant took in $13.6 million (-44.8%) on its second weekend. That drop isn't as bad as the 50.1% drop for The Girl on the Train last weekend, but it still isn't too good for an adult thriller like this. With the mixed reception from critics, that was expected. More foreign markets will contribute to the $57.8 million worldwide total of the film when they open up over the next few weeks. Only then will the film make strides in covering its $44 million budget.
The Girl on the Train made $7.1 million (-41.5%) in its third weekend in release. Despite mixed reviews, the $45 million thriller has grossed over $103.8 million worldwide.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children grossed $5.8 million (-34.2%) this weekend. Tim Burton's latest didn't exactly light up the box office domestically with $74.3 million so far, but the $110 million film has brought in a total of $224.8 million worldwide. It's not much of a hit for Fox, but at least they didn't take a hit.
Keeping Up with the Joneses opened to $5.4 million. The Zach Galifianakis-Jon Hamm comedy was made for $40 million, and doesn't have much of a chance of making that up. With foreign territories included, the movie has earned $7.9 million so far.
Kevin Hart: What Now? made $4.1 million (-65.0%) in its second weekend. The film may have had the biggest opening weekend for a stand-up special, but its drop is far worse than the 52.6% drop from Hart's special, Let Me Explain, from a few years ago. Regardless, the movie has grossed $18.9 million so far on a $9.9 million budget. Universal will make something from it.
