Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows opened to a lackluster $35.3 million. The first film opened to $65.5 million which represents a 45.8% decline between installments. If TMNT 2 follows the first film's run, it barely gets over $100 million domestic. Since sequels are usually more frontloaded, and TMNT 2 doesn't get the "end of the Summer" treatment that the first film got, it's probably going to make a lot less than that. Good word of mouth doesn't exist for this movie so it's all up to the kids to drag their parents to this before Finding Dory demolishes everything in its path. TMNT 2 cost $135 million and has grossed $68.3 million worldwide so far.
X-Men: Apocalypse snagged $22.8 million (-65.3%) in its second weekend. X-Men movies always fall hard (even Deadpool), but Apocalypse's drop is the third biggest for the series behind Origins (-69.0%) and The Last Stand (-66.9%). Days of Future Past sits in fourth with a 64.2% drop in its second weekend. If Apocalypse follows DOFP, it gets about $170 million domestic. That's certainly not bad for the $178 million movie that was going to make most of its money from foreign markets anyway. The film has already pulled in $284.4 million from those foreign markets for a $401.4 million worldwide total. It's making money, but it's a noticeable step down from DOFP.
Me Before You debuted to $18.7 million. For the Emilia Clarke-Sam Claflin romance film, it's certainly not the next Fault in Our Stars, which opened to $48 million on this weekend two years ago. Since Me Before You only cost $20 million, it doesn't have to be the little phenomenon that Fault was. Me Before You has grossed $26.9 million worldwide so far.
Alice Through the Looking Glass pulled in $11.3 million (-57.9%) on its second weekend. The first film opened to $116.1 million and dropped 46% to a $62.7 million second weekend. At $51.3 million domestic, Alice 2 will barely top the second weekend of its predecessor. The sequel is pacing an unbelievable 75.4% behind the 2010 flick domestically. At $176.3 million worldwide and not much room to grow, this $170 million flick looks to be a loss for Disney. Hope the company that has two $1 billion movies already this year, the $900 million Jungle Book, and Finding Dory on the way can recoup the loss.
The Angry Birds Movie grossed $10.2 million (-45.6%) this weekend. The $73 million animation has grossed a solid $87.1 million domestically. As far as video game adaptions go, that's third best behind Tomb Raider ($131.1m) and Prince of Persia ($90.7m). Add in $196.7 million from foreign markets and the film has grossed a profitable $283.9 million worldwide.
Captain America: Civil War took in $7.8 million (-49.1%) on its fifth weekend in release. It may keep on plummeting from weekend to weekend (49.1% is the best hold the movie has gotten so far), but the third Cap film has brought in $389.1 million domestically (23rd all time) for $1.13 billion worldwide (12th all time).
Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising made $4.8 million (-48.0%) this weekend. At $48.7 million domestically, Neighbors 2 is tracking the first film by a whopping 57.1%. The movie was only made for $35 million and has already grossed $89.4 million worldwide. Don't expect Neighbors 3 though.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping debuted to a horrific $4.6 million. When the third weekend of Neighbors 2 beats your opening weekend, that's got to hurt. That $20 million budget will have to wait to be covered until home release.
The Nice Guys brought in $3.4 million (-47.0%) this weekend. Made for $50 million with only $41.0 million worldwide in the bank, Warner Bros. must be disappointed with this one.
The top ten are as follows:
1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows - $35.3 million (NEW)
2. X-Men: Apocalypse - $22.8 million (-65.3%)
3. Me Before You - $18.7 million (NEW)
